9mm Girls #1 is a comic written and drawn by Ash Kohari. A pair of friends’ security gig goes awry when two strange people attack. This is a supernatural comic starring mostly women that features hard-hitting violence, erotic moments, and some drama. The leading ladies for this tale are Aya and Hazel. Aya has short black hair and acts as the muscle for the team; she has a cool demeanor. Hazel has long blonde hair and is the brains of the operation as she stays in the bus and provides assistance using technology; she gets mad quickly and claims she isn’t a lesbian. This story begins at a party where Aya is working as security and Hazel is providing recon. A mysterious individual arrives which causes this duo to be on alert, When Aya attempts to question him on his movements he places his hand on her head and throws her into the bar. This takes place in world where demons walk around and people with strange abilities exist. The violence here is brutal and mainly physical with blood and gore. The pacing here is slightly faster than average overall and the tone here is like a mix of stealth and supernatural action. The intensity here spikes due to violence and danger. The dialogue is all conversational with a good deal of back-and-forth. There are no word-heavy pages here. This is an exciting debut issue that throws us right into the hard-hitting action with a cast of strong, interesting, and very mysterious characters.
The art here is detailed, a tad bit cartoonish and drawn in a style reminiscent of manga. This is in black-and-white but there is heavy use of patterns, as well as Ben-Day and half-tone dots. There isn’t any natural scenery as this takes place in and outside of buildings and inside vehicles. The main location is a seemingly upscale club-like place with a bar, multiple floors, and VIP areas. The backgrounds show the immediate and distant surroundings most of the time but there are many stylized backdrops that force us to focus on the characters. The expression level here is a tick above average as there are frequent reactions to what is going on. The common emotions are anger, shock, indifference, fear, confusion, and annoyance. The faces here have an average amount of detail and large eyes that can make the looks come across a bit stronger. The violence is primarily delivered via firearms and physicality. There is some blood and light gore and though the attacks can be hard-hitting they aren’t gruesome. The action scenes come in bursts interrupted by the changing perspective between Aya and Hazel. It features a decent amount of panels with a generally unconfusing flow.
