Surrounded By Death #2 is a comic created by Joe Martinez and Johnny C.. One of the most realistic takes on the zombie genre out there returns! After living in paradise for weeks everything has come crashing down. Why? They’re out of vanilla blend coffee. What seems to be a miniscule problem is spiraling into something much bigger so Matt and Pete have to do something about it. While the first issue mostly dealt with the personal relationships and social dynamics of survivors in a zombie apocalypse, this one gets into some action. There are a good amount of wordy pages but they flow like your average conversation so it reads faster. If you’ve ever gone on some kind of mission with your friends that required a plan then this comic will hit home for you. The different characters we focus on have some good development and there are little inklings of untold stories that hopefully get explained in the future. If you’ve been looking for a zombie story without the overbearing dread this is it.
This comic takes place in a mall, in the late 80’s. They go to the roof at one point but that aside it’s all stores and a food court. In a comic that relies on conversations as the main storytelling device it is much appreciated when the faces adapt to what is said The faces in this comic are decent for the most part, but the variance between each instance of a single character’s face can be too high. I was born in the 90’s so I’m not real knowledgeable about 80’s hair and outfits. I just think about rock bands and figure they got em close enough. The action is hard-hitting and gory. I mean this is still a zombie comic. And this does a nice job of helping the reader understand the direction of battle.
“Is this worth reading?”
Yes.
“Would I like this?”
If you want a more calm, less overly aggressive zombie apocalypse comic, this is for you. Especially if you like banter-heavy stories.
“What would this comic’s film rating be?”
R. Still zombies.
“Could I get a quote from the comic?”
“Do you even have weapons handy?”
