Pneumatic Cases #1 is a comic created by Josh Wilson with art by Rowel Roque. This is a tale starring Percy and Anastasia Ravenscroft, a husband and wife duo that are extremely intelligent. This story takes place in London during the Victorian Age and has slight steampunk vibes. The meat of the story has the loving couple attempting to solve a murder that is not what it seems on the surface. And when I said loving couple I mean LOVING. They kiss a lot. And there is quite a bit of flirting. They remind me of Nick and Nora Charles from the Thin Man series of films. This also means that they talk frequently and sometimes it can be a bit much. But the banter isn’t over done. The investigative elements appear to have some weight behind them with conclusions making sense and not being pulled out of thin air. The only real difference between this comic and a mystery novel is that novels are longer and don’t have pictures.
Like most mystery stories, the protagonist moves around a lot. Only a few of these locations stand out, but they still have more places to go. This is a very expressive comic. If you have married leads that talk a lot it helps to see the looks on their faces as they say these things. Death stares, sly grins, and just plain irritation are a few of the things that get across messages the words don’t. Now the faces themselves fluctuate from showing above-average detail to only the basics. It never looks bad, but you’ll sometimes wish it looked better. The outfits are appropriate for the time, minus the green glasses they have on their top hats. There isn’t much in the way of action here but when it gets active the scenes look decent. The art style here reminds me of comics from the 70’s.
