Ennead: The Rule of Nine, Book 3 – A Hunt Such As This is a comic created and written by J. L. Johnson with art by Martin Nihlen. I did not look at the page count before reading and was surprised to see it end so quickly. This is a short tale of hunting party led by Lady Gideon and Earl Lannis. They are attempting to catch something for some royal’s ascension. Though this isn’t the most talkative issue it still offers up some good banter. And there isn’t any excessive wordiness on these pages so it’s a nice, quick, enjoyable read. And I hope this isn’t the last time we see these two leads in this series.
This takes place on a hunt, and a hunt usually means woods. We see a lot of trees and random brush in this issue and it looks like you’d expect. The creature they are hunting looks like a moose on steroids and it is drawn quite menacingly. Lady Gideon is decked out in some body armor brings to mind samurais while Earl Lannis is wearing something a medieval archer might don. Our two leads have their expressions written on their faces at all times and that makes each back-and-forth better. This comic is more action scenes than stills and the flow is good. This is swift read is pleasing to the eyes.
