Average Joe #1 is a comic created by Thomas E. Ryan. This is a tale that takes place in a world full of superheroes. Our main character is one Max Buchanan, a person with the ability to memorize anything he interacts with. So in the grand scheme of things he’s not all that. He works in a public relations firm for superheroes and lives a life that really isn’t remarkable. Until things go wrong. It’s not very often you see a superhero story told from this perspective. Is this kind of premise new? Not at all. But the way it is handled here is intriguing and has me looking forward to the follow-up. The dialogue here is realistic and logical and the characterization so far is good. None of these pages are too wordy and this plot has good pacing. This is a strong first issue for a new series.
From an office to a bar to an alley, this comic travels to many different locations. When it comes to facial expressiveness this comic has it in droves. Even the background characters are consistent with the emoting. Speaking of faces, the ones here are pretty much unique. There might be light similarities but not enough to confuse you. We don’t see enough of the superheroes but when we do see them their fits are aight. But it’s hard to make a cool outfit no one’s seen before in this day and age. Blades and guns are the only weapons we really see here, maybe the arsenal will open up in the future. When super effects are on the page they stand out on the page and look powerful. The action scenes are quite chaotic but you shouldn’t get lost in the flow. You could argue that a few women shown suffer from light sexualiztion, but given the contexts it isn’t egregious. Overall this is an art style that I don’t normally see, but it works well.
