Ennead: The Rule of Nine, Book 2 – On The Road Again is a comic created and written by J. L. Johnson with art by Luke Horsman. In the first issue it was difficult to see the lines in the sand but I think I understand what’s going on now. This story follows three main people/groups: King Ulius and his two sons, Inahtuu, and a third group that I can’t name because it might not even be a group. Now this issue started off a bit slow and it had “exposition dump” vibes but it really turns it up once we get settled. When you read this comic you will get an feeling that it is building up to something. And I don’t mean this in a “duh, this isn’t the last issue ya goober” kind of way. I mean it in the way that what some of these characters are doing are clear steps towards an end that is bigger than what they think. In that sense it reminds me of Game of Thrones. When it comes to the technical details this comic reads pretty well, except sometimes there be way too many words on the page and that slows everything down. The story pacing is good though and the perspective switches probably won’t throw you for a loop.
It’s hard to judge locations here because aside from an aerial shot letting us know where we are they aren’t prominent enough. Black-and-white comics tend to put their best foot forward when it comes to facial expressions and this comic is no slouch. I normally like to say that if the faces are very expressive you can tell what is said without words, but there are so many doggone words on some of these pages that by the time you look at the faces you’ll already know what’s up. The action scenes flow nicely for the most part but every now and then I’ll get confused on just how and where a character was struck. It’s also a bit easier to tell characters apart this time around, I believe I just need to get used to this art style.
“Is this worth reading?”
Yes.
“Would I like this?”
If you like thick and wordy fantasy books this is a significantly wordy fantasy comic! There is a good amount of world building and uniqueness to be found here.
“What would this comic’s film rating be?”
R.
“Could I get a quote from the comic?”
“It would be rude of me to one up my guests!”
