A good while ago I bought(I think) this game called The Lion’s Song. This is a game where you do stuff and hear music. Why was that description so brief you ask? Well that’s because I don’t exactly remember the gameplay, and when I reinstalled it to get screenshots and refresh my memory I discovered all my save data was gone. So now I actually have to replay some of the game. Please excuse me.
So I started playing episode one and I must say, this pixel art is gorgeous. And the music is good. I only played seven more minutes because it is a tad bit late and this game will definitely put me to sleep which will make it harder to analyze it properly. Something that returned to my memory as I played was that this game seems to focus on artists, as the lady in this first episode composes for the violin. I think the second guy paints.
After consulting with myself I’ve come to the realization that I’ll only be able to finish the first story so I’m gonna talk about it here. Expect spoilers. Our main lady Wilma is a violinist composer at some university I’ve forgotten the name of(if I ever knew). She starts off sitting in her Professor Arthur’s office waiting for him to return, and I’m pretty sure they are sleeping together. Isn’t it frowned upon for student and teacher to be messing around? I thought it was. Maybe it was different then. Or Europe has different rules.
In this game so far I’ve only been able to do two things: click on random areas on screen to get info and make dialogue choices. Why’d I tell you that? Well I like to be thorough in my descriptions. Nah I’m joking. I told you that because during the ensuing conversation with Professor Arthur at least one of my three dialogue choices for too many rounds was something relationshipy like “What about us?”
Arthur tells Wilma that the last time she played at the salon(they’re in Vienna) the people loved it so much and the streets want to know when she’s dropping more heat. She tells Arthur that she’s gotten stuck while composing, so he basically forces her to go to his random cabin in the mountains to work on her composition. Alone. And know you they had a dialogue option like “Would you come with me?” No he won’t go with you, he has other students to sleep with. The game didn’t imply any of that but I see what’s going on.
Now you might have gotten this far and thought, “Dang this game sounds interesting, why this guy aint finish it?” Because it requires no skill! All you do is click, read, listen to music, and click some more! I don’t even think there are any wrong decisions! This is a walking simulator but for a point and click game. And sorry to the folks who hate the term “walking simulator” but I don’t know if a new name for those games has come out yet.
Moving on, after Wilma gets to the cabin she gets a little hungry so she empties out her bag onto the table. Scattered among her sheet music and half-wrapped sandwich that is now raw touching the table is a note from Arthur. Upon opening the letter Wilma says, “Perhaps he has written about us?” More thirsty/desperate statements come out upon the reading of said letter that comes off as kinda sad. In this note Arthur says that he’s throwing her a big concert when she gets back featuring some other major players in the music world.
Understandably Wilma starts tweaking because expectations are high and she’s stressed but soon after she’s interrupted by a phone call. Apparently an innkeeper named Leos has just gotten a phone and accidentally called her. Now on my first playthrough I thought he was a potential love interest since Wilma clearly likes older guys so I think I may have slightly tried to hook them up that first time. I don’t think this game allows this to happen. I’m sure about this because I tried to do it again, albeit much more aggressively.
I’m using way more words than I thought I would in explaining why I’ll never finish this game, so I’ll have to split this into two. Come back next week for the THRILLING and EXCITING conclusion!
"it requires no skill" – clearly it did – reading skills and patience, but it seems you got filtered.
Yeah I managed to get around that lol
