Espresso Detective #3 is a comic created by Eric Erdek. Now I don’t know whether it was intended to be this way or not, but this issue gives off the energy of a “calm before the storm” episode. I say that because little progress was made on the overarching story of the little girl, this one mostly focused on a seemingly unrelated case and gave us a little glimpse of Caetano Sanchez’s day-to-day. We follow the good detective as he receives another case at the behest of a former client and is tasked with investigating a massage parlor. It gets a little violent and there are a few surprises along the way, but nothing Espresso Man can’t handle Before all that though we get a necessary glimpse into the mind of Sanchez and what’s really going on with him. Not all his cases are as tangible as they should be. Remember True Noir Tales from the last issue? Well the second part is called “True Noir Romance” and it gets a little steamy but it is a good read. It appears as if this issue as a whole is preparing us for some big things in the future
The art here won’t knock your socks off but it won’t keep them on(?). It’s decent. Scenery looks nice, architecture is well done, and various household items look true to life. The issues arise when you we get to the people. The faces either look good or smushed. The head+neck+chest combo isn’t adding up like it’s supposed to be. It is almost as if the people were made out of clay, so it looks good/passable sometimes and the rest of the time it looks bad enough it gets in the way. Sometimes it makes it hard to tell who exactly we are looking at. But when you look at the issue as a whole it gets a passing grade.
