The Outrider #1 is a comic created by Marc Anthony Brown. Cops pinned down by gunfire, civilians running for safety in the subway, thieves packing up the loot; this is how the story starts off. We see our main man Marcel dressed up in some hero garb watching from above as he makes moves to intervene. He calls his friend Andi and lets her know what he’s about to get into, much to her disappointment. Apparently he’s neglecting some school responsibilities by going on this escapade. This is debut comic that wastes little time getting into the action; it showcases the main characters and gives a decent look at what is to come. There is a short story in the beginning that seems a bit too spoilery that I won’t get into here because it seems to have significant implications on the plot. The dialogue here is realistic and the narration is Marcel’s thoughts, so we get a full look at events through his eyes.
The art here is smooth. The environment looks good our quick glimpse look into the dorm looks accurate with enough items to evoke those old undergrad memories. The buildings look sharp and shiny and have little features that make it look like more than just a backdrop. The costumes worn here are on the more reasonable side; they look like something you’d wear in actual combat and not something that people could see from miles away. The characters themselves are drawn well, specifically the hair and the faces; which show a decent amount of expressions.
“Is this worth reading?”
Yes.
“Would I like this?”
If you like comics starring young superheroes with a story that seems like it will get deep, you might want to give this a look. If you were looking for a comic where the mains are PoC’s, this has that.
“What would this comic’s film rating be?”
PG-13. Lil violent.
“Could I get a quote from the comic?”
“The things I do for this boy.”
