Saving the World #4 is a comic written and illustrated by Tonicmole and published by Tonic Comix. This is by far the heaviest story in the series and it features a villain with a body count. This story deals with themes of depression and suicide. It tackles these subjects in a realistic way, not just painting with a broad brush and filling the dialogue with clichés. Even from the beginning one can tell the tone is different because the trademark humor doesn’t fully kick in until about halfway through the story. In the midst of all this we get an up-to-date look at Nora’s current life and a significant amount of her backstory. Overall this is a good story. You won’t laugh as much as you have before but the trade-off is worth it.
When it comes to making sad scenes hit visually I believe that the sharper, more realistic art you see in the big-name comics isn’t the greatest vehicle. Art of that caliber tends to look great but key elements such as expressive faces, and easily readable body language tends to get left behind. So in comic with art such as this, when we see a character is sad, we can feel the sadness. It can be read on the face, seen on the body, and confirmed by the dialogue. Especially how this series has built up Kierra and Nora’s personalities through humor, seeing a less cheery side to them is off-putting in a positive way.
“Is this worth reading?”
Yes.
“Would I like this?”
If you like to see comics tackle heavy subjects this is worth your time. I do recommend reading the earlier issues first. Also a good read for superheroine fans.
“What would this comic’s film rating be?”
PG-13.
“Could I get a quote from the comic?”
“Technically we’re cosplaying.”
