Mythica: Darkness Rising is a comic collection created by Matt Campbell. It collects Mythica issues 1-6. In this story we follow the varied adventures of the Belgian Kimberly Bradshaw, the Scot Magnus MacDracken, and the Irish Riley Scott as they fight foes both human and supernatural during WWI. I’ll attempt to keep this light as reviewing six issues at once makes spoilers almost unavoidable. I’ll just be giving a very basic plot overview and ever so gently touch on the driving force behind each protagonist. Kimberly is a young woman in Belgium who is currently having dreams about Magnus and his exploits with the Blackwatch. These dreams disturb her greatly for reasons other than the obvious. Her world is turned askew when her boyfriend Yosef announces that he is going to be a medic on the front lines. Magnus and his men are currently on a mission to sabotage some German supply lines. After some routine surveillance and movement they run into and battle with some demonic creature. After narrowly defeating it but being the sole survivor of the battle Magnus is very distraught. In the middle of his mourning a supernatural being appears and offers him answers. Riley Scott is a spy who along with her partner Rutherford is spying on the Germans. They head to Transylvania on a mission and after finding their target, things go very wrong. Overall this is an interesting story seen from many different angles. And the story is not yet complete, there is an issue seven already out with more to come.
The art in this story has a dark tone. Even when it’s daylight you feel it. This fits perfectly with story as it isn’t exactly cheery. The otherworldly creatures are drawn with great detail and little quick that make them unique. The outfits in this comic are nicely drawn but not cookie-cutter even for background characters. Kimberly Bradshaw has a wardrobe fitting for the time with various dresses, hats, and scarves. Magnus wears a kilt which stands out as something I rarely see in comics, even in the story some people question him about it. Riley Scott has the most varied and eye-catching outfits by far, wearing bright dresses, pants(women didn’t really do that back then), and something that would be a terrible pun if I wrote it here. Also this comic has what I love, expression-heavy, detailed faces.
