Neo Tokyo: The Truth is a Virus #1 is a comic by Atrocity Press. There is at least an ounce of cyberpunkness leaking from every page. That much cyberpunk can be dangerous if you aren’t prepared. Normally I can read a comic once and understand it enough to give a respectable review but not this time. As I write this I’m about to take a break and re-read just to make sure I truly know what’s going on. Alright I’ve just run it back and here’s what I got. This is a story about a guy named Johnathan “Virus” Swall who is being framed for a terrorist attack on Morse Medical and the murder of his parents. While being hunted by various factions he acquires help in the form of his friend Machine and a woman named Skye. This first issue simply lays the groundwork and lets us know what we are getting into. Just about every other page is a livestream by someone who is either for the bombing or against it, or has their own random agenda.
There are quite a few fantastical characters in this comic. Three-eyed mutants, big-eyed aliens, metal-jawed men, and way too many Mohawk hairstyles. I can guarantee that your eyes will not get bored for one second because this comic is bright and colorful. And I’m not sure how much nudity you are expecting but this comic has more. A few of the faces in this comic suffer slightly from looking a bit too similar to others but it isn’t that noticeable. There are a whole bunch of faces. One thing prevalent in cyberpunk and shown off very well in this comic is the wide variety unique outfits and dress styles. Some people are wearing more straps than an RPG character, others are wearing little more than underwear and duct tape. All this contributes to making it feel like a vibrant world with chunks of character.
“Is this worth reading?”
Yes, but you will have to read it twice.
“Would I like this?”
If you like cyberpunk or sci-fi this is for you. If you like mysteries you might want to give this a peek.
“What would this comic’s film rating be?”
Somewhere in between PG-13 and R.
“Could I get a quote from the comic?”
“What the frag have I gotten myself into?”
