Are you tired of the big giant mainstream comic publishers? Do you want to read something with characters you’ve never heard of? It sounds like you’re ready for some indie comics. And fam do I have some suggestions for you! Wait when you said indie did you mean super indie? Like some of these don’t even have publishers? Like folk gave their hard-earned pizza money to get these comics completed? Oh you didn’t? You weren’t even aware of the phrase “super indie”? Well you’re here now, so here are five good crowdfunded comic series you might want to read. In order to qualify for this list there must be at least three comics in the series out right now. Let’s go!
Nothing-Man
So you say you like superheroes? Well I think most people do. Oh you want a bunch of them in the comic at once? Like teetering on the edge of excessive? On both sides of the fight? Well Nothing-Man has exactly what you need! Taking place mostly in one embattled city, this is a story about a missing hero, an evil organization, and a resistance movement attempting to free citizens from the shackles of tyranny. That was an odd amount of big words I used there. Anyway this comic is very witty with characters having big personalities and holding conversations that are very realistic while also having personal issues that make them seem more real. And there is a lot of fighting. There are close up fights, bloody battles, and not everyone is making it to the end. Also the different superpowers and gimmicks are pretty interesting. And even though this series is called “Nothing-Man” the guy it’s referencing isn’t really the star. I’d say out of the ten most important characters he’s third, and the rest of the top ten are women.
“Is this series still ongoing?”
Yes, with seven issues out right now.
“How is the art?”
Bursting with personality and high amounts of detail. The characters have their feelings plastered on their faces. The backgrounds are very well done too.
“What is the overall film rating of this series?”
R, things get gruesome and can get pretty dark. Also titties be out quite a bit.
“I didn’t read all those words. Who exactly is this for?”
This is for fans of large casts and a sort of war between two groups of superpowered people. Also for those who like women-dominated stories and witty dialogue.

Mythica
Oh I misheard you before? You didn’t want superPOWERS you wanted something superNATURAL? My bad. Well I do happen to have something for you! How would you like a story with three different leads in three different places dealing with the same threat? In 1914? Oh you need more info on the people? Well this team consists of one fella and two lasses. The fella is Magnus MacDracken, a Scottish soldier in German territory attempting to do some more covert missions. The first lead lady we meet is Kimberly Bradshaw, an engaged woman whose life takes a turn for the worse and puts her completely out of her element. The second lead lass is Riley Scott, an MI6 agent known for her disguises and undercover work and who is currently working an angle against the Germans not knowing of how dark it truly gets. And it gets dark; there are demons, vampires, and random winged creatures. The story moves at good pace with great balancing between the three stars and a good story that’ll have you waiting for the other shoe to drop.
“Is this series still ongoing?”
Yes, seven issues so far and the eighth has already been funded.
“How is the art?”
High detail, especially when it comes to the human characters. Faces are easily readable and the people seem to have more life. The creatures also look as creepy as they should and can invoke terror. The background, scenery, and interiors are slightly above-average for the most part.
“What is the overall film rating of this series?”
R, blood, gore, scary stuff, and titties.
“I didn’t read all those words. Who exactly is this for?”
This is for fans of WW1-era European tales involving the supernatural; led by a ragtag team of people with varying skills. Two out of the three mains are women and while one of them is completely tossed about by the situation the other one is very much in control.

La Muerta
Wait a gosh darn minute, now yall are mad at me for suggesting two series that MOSTLY star women? You want a lady to be the sole attraction? Well it’s very fortunate that I know about the comic series La Muerta. This is a story about an army vet named Maria Diaz who comes back home and things go left very fast. After her life is flipped around she becomes a vigilante with slight superpowers and fights foes both human and supernatural. This is story is dripping with both Aztec and Mexican influences. If you speak Spanish you’ll probably get even more out of the comic than I did. The way folklore and legends are taken and applied in a more modern context is very interesting. Besides our lady La Muerta there are a few other characters that have big personalities and a propensity for violence. Speaking of violence, the level here is very high with rampant gunfire, blade battles, and just straight up fisticuffs. You’ll see grave injuries, buckets of blood, and just downright disturbing spectacles. Every issue is packed with excitement and just about every other one ends on a sort of cliffhanger.
“Is this series still ongoing?”
Yes, seven issues so far, the eighth is fully funded.
“How is the art?”
Drawn in the average comic book style but with high detail and easily readable faces, the violence is drawn very realistically and the gore is rarely avoided. Even the detail in the tattoos and stains on bandages are done well. No sameness at all anywhere, even with multiple characters on the page they are drawn different enough as to not confuse. A visual treat.
“What is the overall film rating of this series?”
R, this is very bloody, burning, strong horror elements, and lots of death.
“I didn’t read all those words. Who exactly is this for?”
This is for fans of tales starring a superheroine who is very good at fighting with issues full of action and heavily influenced by Aztec and Mexican cultures and involving more supernatural elements. To describe her using a comparison I would say she’s a Mexican Lady Punisher but less angry.

Saving the World
Alright so I guess it’s my fault this time. You guys wanted a team of TWO superpowered women who are out here fighting crime? Thank God Saving the World is out! This is tale about two ladies named Kierra and Nora who become friends and crimefighting buddies after a random night where they are suddenly gifted with powers. But they aren’t the only ones! All over town there are people who got powers and some use them for good, others for evil, and others attempt to force their ideals on others. But who are our heroines? Well Kierra is a 20-something woman bored with her day-to-day life and is just trying to get by; she gets super strength after that night. Nora lives with her boyfriend and after that night is granted super smarts. They fight and meet with a lively cast of characters, all with distinct personalities. This comic has an overall humorous vibe but it can get heavy occasionally. And the deeper subjects aren’t just used for a quick downer moment; the subjects are explored and have conclusions. The dialogue is very realistic and witty and the conversations flow well. This isn’t an action-heavy comic but when things get violent it doesn’t end too quick.
“Is this series still ongoing?”
Yep, and seven issues are out right now.
“How is the art?”
It has an art style all its own and it’s all black-and-white. This style lends itself to expressive faces and that makes the characters’ personalities pop out and imbues them with more life. Because of this you’ll glean humor not only from the words and the subject matter but also visually. You will also see a good amount of teeth.
“What is the overall film rating of this series?”
Somewhere between PG-13 and R based on what you see but subject matter definitely makes it R.
“I didn’t read all those words. Who exactly is this for?”
This is for people who like leading ladies who are superheroines in stories that can be both humorous and touch on sensitive subjects and for people who like more relatable characters.

Fox and Hound
So let me get this straight. You did want a team of two women? Ok I did that part. But more specifically you wanted two women who are lady thieves and have super suits and deep dark pasts and most importantly(your words) are into each other? You need to get outside more fam. But yes I have the series for you. Fox and Hound is a story starring Charlie Minc(Hound) and Lena Petrov(Fox) as thieves by commission whose endeavors dredge up pasts they’ve tried to leave behind. These ladies use seduction, violence, and other people in order to get what they want. In the downtime between missions they are forced to face things they’d rather not. They do have a supporting cast of interesting characters, the main one being a man named Giovanni who acts as their contact. The more violent scenes tend to only appear when their stealthier plans go awry, which happens enough for us to get a good look at their super suits. Their suits are mostly just upper body armor and high-tech masks. But how do they put on their suits? Well let me preface this by saying that I wasn’t aware of how they did it beforehand so don’t go judging me. They be tearing clothes like the Hulk. As a matter of fact, they spend half of almost every issue missing clothes! But let’s move on. The dialogue is full of snark and snide remarks and they argue frequently with jokes thrown in.
“Is this series still ongoing?”
I do not know. Four issues are out, but you can only easily purchase the first two.
“How is the art?”
The style varies but it is overall very good, the characters are drawn very expressively and full of life, and the various faces they make add more weight to their words. Blood and gore aren’t frequent here but the detail isn’t skimped on. There are three different art directions in just four issues but I think it looks the best in #2.
“What is the overall film rating of this series?”
R. They be naked a lot. Oh and violence.
“I didn’t read all those words. Who exactly is this for?”
Besides horny people this is for those who like lady-led crime stories involving stealth and violence, with a close relationships between the leads. You might like this if you are a fan of LGBTQIA stories.
