Young Rebels #1 is a comic created by Marcel Dupree with art by Alti Firmansyah. In this debut issue we meet our five stars and get a glimpse of what they’re about. This really is just about meeting the characters. And who are they? Well we have three guys and two gals, they are all teens, and at least two of them are clearly influenced by a more major super person. First we have Marco Martinez who is pretty much a young Tony Stark, there’s a Filipino guy from Cali named Joseph who might be electrically inclined, an Italian girl named Gabbi who is very fast and strong, an Anime-loving black kid from Brooklyn named Christopher who has magic-adjacent powers, and lastly we have Starfire a pink alien with green hair and yellow eyes whose name we don’t hear. While some of these characters are clearly inspired by others I have faith they’ll be fleshed out in future issues and become their own people. The plot here is very light as the “camera” jumps from person to person; but the end leaves us with something. Action is decent and blood makes a cameo. The banter in this comic is very good and the conversations sound realistic. No wordy pages here at all. This comic introduces us to five different people and hopes that we’ll want to see how their stories turn out.
This is a great looking comic. It’s fantastically colored, it focuses on little details, and you can feel the fun coming off the pages. This being an issue that hops from person to person we see many different locations and they persist throughout the panels. The backgrounds do a good amount of work here. The expression level here is above-average and the characters use more than just their face to convey emotion. The faces are very malleable and none of them look alike. There are a wide range of hairstyles here. The action scenes, though few, are easy to follow. The outfits look like something you or someone you know is wearing right now. Absolutely no sexualization going on here.
“Is this worth reading?”
Yes.
“Would I like this?”
If you like new superfolk stories starring a cast from different cultural and racial backgrounds who are all teens and have no idea of what’s to come this is for you.
“What would this comic’s film rating be?”
PG-13. Some blood appears.
“Could I get a quote from the comic?”
“Yes, I have a katana, I don’t know how to use it. It’s more for aesthetics.”
