DARE #1 is a comic written by Michael Seltzer & Charles Borg with art by Sam Hart. Here we get a look at a day in the life of a police officer who breaks more laws than he follows.. This comic is sort of like the movie Training Day with its rookie and vet pairing except these guys are regular cops and not detectives. Our main character is an Elvis looking guy named Lucious Daren and he’s guy with many bad qualities who acts like he’s in a frat. His partner is named Peter but is called Guppy by Lucious because he is a rookie. The plot has these fellas heading to the scene of a shooting and events unfold from there. There are enough unexpected moments here to keep you engaged. There is reckless driving, unsavory comments, and a severe lack of procedure following. We have gunplay and regular ol fisticuffs. The dialogue more often than not tends to be humorous and will probably get a laugh or two out of you. There might be a few wordy pages everything reads so smooth that you won’t notice. This is comedy tale about a bad cop and it ends on a very interesting note.
This comic is drawn in a modern style with a bunch of colors and a lot of onomatopoeias. This story mainly takes place in one location but we do get a good view of the city as they drive there. The various backgrounds tend to persist from panel-to-panel. This is a story where the main character is by far the most expressive and the others are far behind. The faces have a good amount of detail overall but a bit more time was spent on the lead. Some faces do have similarities but it isn’t too noticeable. Lucious’ hair is interesting though. The action scenes are pretty long and violent but you shouldn’t get out of place.
