We Are Scarlet Twilight #3 is a comic created by Benjamin Morse. Captain Lancet and his forces continue the fight against Madame Satanika and her cronies. This issue features many fights and a closer look at the Captain himself. What we know already is that Captain Lancet has vampire tendencies but attempts to keep his thirst for blood in check. Madame Satanika is the head of the Scarlet Twilight cult and has ruled over the US for over a century. The conflict between these two is showcased here as they struggle to gain an advantage and be rid of the other. The action here is bloody and feral as can be expected when vampires are afoot. This story initially took place in the 1930’s so the tone of older black-and-white movies is how I have them talking in my head. Or like an old radio show. This comic isn’t wordy unless it is giving us information in which case the text bubbles start to stack. This is an exciting issue that answers questions and fills in gaps while building towards a climax.
This comic is drawn in the art deco style with the four main colors being red, yellow, blue, and black; in various shades. The atmosphere has a high class air supported by the fact that this battle takes place between two skyscrapers. The bridge is one of two locations we visit during this issue, the other being a bit more rural. There are flashes of other emotions here but the most significant one you’ll see is anger. Everybody is angry and they have the faces of leading men and women during classic Hollywood. Face sameness is a thing here so stay focused or you’ll get confused. The vampire elements here are mostly the fangs but we do get the head of a bat occasionally. The equipment is mostly sword-based with a few laser guns for flavor. The action is stabby and everybody bleeds; with the scenes being about average-length. The outfits are very smooth and shiny and hearken back to the earlier days of comics.
“Is this worth reading?”
Yes.
“Would I like this?”
If you like supernatural stories told in a way reminiscent of old radio and TV shows with a rarely seen art deco style this is for you.
“What would this comic’s film rating be?”
R. Way too many stabbings.
“Could I get a quote from the comic?”
“I’ve fought a long, long time to make it known…”
