The Sentinel #1 is a comic created by Isaac Willbanks and Matteo Meloni. A man falls from the sky into a city that has seen its fill of super folk. This is a story that has shades of Superman and the MCU but it has been blended up nicely. The man on the cover is named Orion and he has super-strength, flight, and memory loss. The person with the most page time is Doctor Valerie Jones, a scientist who discovers Orion as he landed in her yard. The plot is seen from Valerie and Orion’s perspective and from the perspective of a man named Anton who is attempting to make it so that superheroes won’t be needed anymore. The action is very heavy-handed and looks like something out of movie. The dialogue has classic heroic quips scattered about but it should be easy to understand. There aren’t any wordy pages but a couple of them do get a bit thick. Overall this is an interesting debut comic that is clearly influenced by others; here’s hoping it’ll come into its own.
This is drawn in a smooth style but not in the way most modern comic are. The coloring is realistic and a good job is done at highlighting the important characters against the backdrop. The three main locations this story takes place are on a farm, in a lab, and in downtown Saturn City. Whether or not they persist from panel-to-panel will vary. This comic does an above-average job at showing expressions with the people showing a wide range of emotions. The faces are smoother and have fewer lines when it comes to the women but the men are full of wrinkles, scars, and stress. There is a bit of face sameness but nothing that’ll throw you off. The action scenes are full of big hits and showcase a brawling style. They are easy to follow and have are a decent length. The outfits lean either to modern superhero or classic fantasy.
