Magi’s Grace #1 is a comic created and written by JD Calderon with illustrations by C. Michael Lanning and colors by Edgar Tavitas. Two combatants of the supernatural find themselves in dangerous situations. This is a violent tale that features familiar creatures and a plot you might get lost in. The leading lady of this comic is Grace, a woman with unspecified abilities of the mystical kind and who is somewhat easily annoyed. Joining her on these missions is Magi, a man with a wide variety of weapons and who is a bit quick to anger. We’ll also see their spouses and children. The story begins in the middle of a scuffle with some of the characters’ personalities shining through. Though most of this story is seen from Grace and Magi’s perspective we will see certain scenes from different angles and this helps round things out. The action here is very bloody with some gory and gruesome moments. The first half of this comic moves faster than the latter as there are more than a few word-heavy pages. There are some prolonged high intensity moments but outside of those things are relatively calm. The dialogue is snappy with plenty of back-and-forth between characters. Some of these characters speak with a mafia/mob accent. This is an exciting debut issue for a comic with two fleshed-out leads, supernatural violence, and a story we’ve only scratched the surface of.
The art here is slightly cartoonish with some thickness while showcasing a style reminiscent of art from the late 90’s/early 2000’s. The color range here is wide with some subtle shading. Part of this story takes place in a wooded area with rustic buildings and many trees with the other sections taking place in a city with brick-based buildings. The locations tell a story themselves if you pay attention to the backgrounds which usually show the rest of the scene. The expression level here is high as these characters have a new look nearly every panel. Though the range is mostly looks on the aggressive/angry side we will see some lighthearted ones. Due to the art being slightly cartoony the faces wear emotions especially well as they have pronounced features; there won’t be any confusion about emotions here. The bodies have varying levels of proportion with heads seeming slightly bigger than normal. The creatures here will be familiar to you if you engage with supernatural media. Mystical effects are bright and eye-catching. The violence here is very bloody with some dismemberment and gore. The action scenes have a good amount of panels that keep everything flowing so you won’t get lost. Grace likes to wear revealing outfits and her clothing gets torn in combat. Every woman here looks like a model with large breasts.
