Born of Blood #6 is a comic written by Dolan with Joe Corallo and illustrated by Aurelio Mazzara with colors by Sebastian Gonzalez. Giaris and Leonidas find themselves at the mercy of the new queen regent. This is a supernatural historical fiction comic that has violence, romance, and vengenance. The leading lady for this tale is Giaris, the Princess of Sparta who seems to always end up in violent situations. With her is Leonidas, the King of Sparta who is sort of caught in the middle of some personal drama. Rounding out the main cast the Queen Regent Aurelia, she was an advisor to Giaris’ father King Cleomenes but she is now wielding power. The story picks up where the last one left off with the royal duo having been captured and sentenced to die. They’ll end up fighting for their lives against familiar and unimaginable foes. With the assistance of flashbacks and monologues we’ll learn the reasons for the animosity and discover that not everyone is as blameless as they seem. The action here is bloody and hard-hitting with light gore. The tone is intense and serious even in the flashbacks as the stakes were and are high. The dialogue is very angry all-around with the characters speaking proper English so expect the occasional big word. No wordy pages here. This is a series that has given us gratuitous violence, dramatic relationships, deep secrets and this final issue maintains those standards while giving us an exciting conclusion.
The art here is slightly cartoonish with a sharpness to it and some top-notch shading. The color palette is mainly reds and browns as this is combat-heavy. The scenery is mostly rocks with the occasional grassy field. The main location is a mountainous valley that we don’ really get the full view of. The backgrounds are usually either rocky or some kind of combination between gradient colors and action lines. The expression level here is very high as these looks add extra impact to the words. The range is mostly anger, frustration, or crazed with some sadder ones coming through on occasion. The faces are full of detail especially on close-ups which make the emotions come out strong and clear. The mystical effects are bright and cannot be missed. The violence is very physical and bloody with some brutal, lightly gory moments. The action scenes flow well and have a high amount of panels. The bare minimum of clothes seems to be the ideal no matter the gender.
