Crossover Division #1 is a comic written by Will Allred with art by Pablo Martinena. In a world where stories are becoming real a select few must set things right. This is a supernatural tale that deals with classic literature and heavy dreamers. The leading man for this story is Dr. Hank Wallace, he is an English professor who has been pretty out of it lately and who finds peace in his books. One of the people he’ll meet is Hector, a man who has been dealing with these “crossovers” for some time now. This story begins in a classroom where a distracted Hank gets through his lesson a bit early which he isn’t supposed to be doing. We get a look at his life which currently seems a bit depressing and dull but an event occurs which changes all that. This takes place in our modern world so the “crossovers” are a bit jarring. The action here is destructive with some light gore. The pacing here is steady with a serious tone and more than a few intense moments. The dialogue is mostly conversational with no word-heavy pages. This is a debut comic that lays out how things work in this world and shows us how these well-read characters deal with it.
The art here is detailed with an aim towards realism with significant attention towards the shading. The range of colors here is wide. For scenery we have some grass and trees but tall buildings and their interiors are where this story will be. The location is usually indoors starting in a school but frequently in homes. It’s about a 50-50 chance of the background either showing part of the scene or being a gradient color. The expression level here is average with the words occasionally being more emotive than the faces. The range isn’t very wide as most looks don’t veer too far off of a straight face. The faces are detailed but they can sometimes have this uncanny/out of place look to them as if they aren’t experiencing the story. The violence here isn’t bloody but it does have some gruesome moments. The action scenes flow well.
