Demon Hunter Raven #1 is a comic written and illustrated by Nicholas Mueller. A young demon hunter battles a coven to save an informant. This is supernatural tale with demons, witches, and hunters that use swords. The leading man for this story is Adam aka Raven, an impatient demon hunter who is searching for his dad. He is accompanied by more experienced hunters but we don’t get their names. The story begins with the hunters scoping out a location and preparing to go on a rescue mission. Things really get going when Raven decides to push early. This takes place in the modern world and there are some family themes present. The action is hard-hitting but not bloody or gory. The pacing is steady with a serious tone and more than a few intense moments, both physical and emotional. The dialogue is conversational for the most part with plenty of back-and-forth and battle quips with no wordy pages. This is a debut comic that gives us equal parts action and backstory and sets a tone that future installments will likely follow.

            The art here is decently detailed and is drawn in more realistic, less cartoony style. The color range is also realistic and there are some different textures used in place of standard coloring. The scenery is either the Minneapolis skyline with many tall, lit buildings or a grassy area with trees. The main location for this story is the coven’s headquarters which has a somewhat royal and grand look to it; the secondary location is the outdoors. The backgrounds usually show part of the scene but can occasionally just be a solid color. The expression level here is around average as a good chunk of the story the main characters are in masks. The range of emotion goes from anger to fear but it doesn’t always come across clearly. The faces have enough detail to show different looks but Raven himself seems too smooth and flat in the face. The violence does involved blades but there is no blood or gore. The action scenes flow well and have a good amount of panels.
