Queens of Dixie #1 is a comic written by Neo Edmund with art by Donny Hadiwidjaja and colors by Julius Pungky and Setiawan. Two women evade the law and set plans into motion way out in the country. This is a parody of the Dukes of Hazzard that retains some of the mythos with a few twists and an all-woman cast. The leading ladies for this story are Laura and Beth Daisy; they are cousins local to the town of Hazard and regularly find themselves running afoul of the law. The law they usually run from is Deputy Roslin, she works for the Police Commissioner Big Boss Lady. This story begins with these girls driving their car, the Southern Belle, at 99 mph. The Deputy sees this traffic transgression and begins to chase them and from there things get exciting and dangerous. The action takes place almost entirely in vehicles so no blood or gore. The pacing is steady and things play out almost like a TV show. The tone is lighthearted and never gets too serious. There are some intense moments as the driving here features close calls. The dialogue is very southern country from these ladies and there is consistent narration. No word-heavy pages here. This is the debut issue of a comic series about some fun-loving country girls going on adventures with their trusty car.
The art style here is reminiscent of the comic series Danger Girl, but much sharper and cleaned up. The color range here is nice and realistic with some decent shading. This takes place as the sun sets so the scenery is brown and dusty with the occasional tree. The sky goes from orange to grey and cloudy. The location is usually the Southern Belle but a couple of the buildings we’ll visit are Aunt Jessie’s house and the slightly high-tech county jail. The backgrounds always show parts of the scene which gives the story beats an extra punch. The expression level here is very high as none of the ladies hide their emotions. The range is either happiness or anger depending on which side of the law they’re on. The faces are drawn with strong features so every look comes across clear and sometimes animated. There isn’t any real violence here and all of the action scenes involve a car; the flow is simple except for one moment where you might get thrown off. Most of the women here are dressed sexily and all of them are built and look like models, even occasionally putting themselves in suggestive poses.
