Odina #1 is a comic written by Onaji Rouse with art by Eric Blake and colors by Adalberto Menezes. Odina is called upon to join the battle against a familiar but more powerful foe. This is a superfolk comic with supernatural elements and a large cast. The leading lady for this tale is Odina, her specific powers aren’t laid out but she is looked at as one of the most powerful people around. She works with a group led by Devon Lennox, a man with the ability to absorb solar energy along with super strength, speed, and endurance. There are at least six other group members with variety of powers. The story begins with this team fighting strange creatures in Atlanta and they are finding themselves being overwhelmed. In the midst of the battle the leader of the opposition, the telepath Felix, shows up to make things worse. The violence here is hard-hitting but with no blood or gore. The pacing is steady and the tone is serious but not overly so. The intensity gets high due to combat and aggressive conversations. Aside from some early narration all the dialogue here is conversational with a lot of back-and-forth. There are no word-heavy pages here. This is an exciting debut comic that introduces an entire cast with the focus on one woman in a story you’ll want to see play out.
The art here is smooth and modern with a good focus on lighting and shading. The range of colors probably sits in the middle of spectrum leaning slightly towards the darker end as there aren’t many bright colors. The scenery primarily consists of an open grassy space in what might be a park that is surrounded by trees. There are three main locations here: The initial battlefield, the group’s headquarters, and an apartment. The headquarters seem high-tech and pristine. The backgrounds usually show the surroundings of the scene but on occasion it’ll be white or a gradient color. The expression level here is slightly below average as just about every character sports a hard almost emotionless look. Besides that stoic appearance we’ll get some angry and pained looks. The faces have a good amount of detail with the cheekbones and eyes being strong features; the expressions come across clear as day. There is some slight face sameness for the women. The effects here are bright and explosive. The violence here is hard-hitting with barely noticeable blood. The action scenes are of varying length and tend to have a good non-confusing flow. Everyone here wears tight outfits with some of the women having their thighs out. All of the women here have large breasts.
