Maru Kiru Destroy the Moon Volume 1 is a comic created by Brandon Albetski. A raging warrior woman is on a quest to destroy the moon. This is a fantasy comic with drama and a large amount of violence that stars a determined and angry woman. The woman in question is Maru Kiru, she is a warrior with great fighting skills and anger. We’ll get small hints about her past and slowly learn why she is so angry at the moon and magic in general. Her main foe is Manotautus, the high-wizard-priest who has been given great power by Golussar, the god-who-sits-astride-the-moon. Maru Kiru receives assistance from a man with a moving house who is very wise and has immense knowledge about the things of this world. This story begins Maru Kiru reaching the peak of the mountain where Manotautus resides. After a few angry words the battle begins which results in Maru being blasted from the top of the mountain. The violence here is hard-hitting with a good amount of blood and heavy gore. The pacing is slightly faster than average and the tone is overall very serious with a bit of adventure. The intensity is high almost the entire time as Maru is a very focused individual. The dialogue here is mainly conversational with some narration that can get poetic, a tad bit hammy, and deep into the lore. There are no word-heavy pages here. This is a comic that stars a very intense lead and places her in a fantastical story that allows her to showcase her strong personality with people as unique as herself.
The art here is very stylized and detailed with a somewhat psychedelic vibe and many thick outlines. Instead of red, blue, and yellows the core colors here appear to be sea green, magenta, and orange and this is paired with some strong shading. For scenery we have the rockiness of a mountain and the dry emptiness of a desert. There are also some notable shots of the sky at different times of day. The location is usually the outdoors in different environments though a city is visited. The backgrounds change frequently from showing the sky to being a gradient color to showing the actual surroundings. The expression level here is around average with Maru tending to rock a stoic look outside of intense situations. The emotions are mainly anger-based with some sinister ones as well. The faces are detailed with strong features(especially the eyes) and get very animated so all the looks come across clearly. The mystical effects here are bright but don’t really stand out too much due to the overall color scheme. The violence involves various weapons with a large amount of blood and gore via gruesome attacks. The action scenes have a good flow for the most but it can get jagged at certain points.
