Magi’s Grace #2 is a comic written by JD Calderon with illustrations by C. Michael Lanning. Grace and Magi continue to battle against the vampire fishmen in Innsmouth. This is a supernatural comic starring a magic & might pair in a story with heavy violence, drama, and intense conversation. The leading lady for this tale is Grace, she is a very powerful sorceress who has an overall unimpressed demeanor. The main man is Magi, he has a wide array of weapons from swords to guns with specific ones for different creatures. These two work together as monster hunters, though they both have their own spouses and kids. This story begins in the middle of the fight we ended on with Magi being surrounded by fishmen. He retreats into the Beast(his armored vehicle) to use more advanced and monster-specific weaponry. This takes place in a world where supernatural creatures and events aren’t out of the ordinary. The violence here is very bloody with vicious attacks and some gore. The story is told from the perspective of both Grace and Magi. The pacing is a mix of steady and fast(during the action scenes) with a monster hunting tone like that of the Underworld movie series or Hack/Slash. There are many intense moments due to danger, violence, and drama. The dialogue is all conversational with a lot of yelling and aggressive back-and-forths. There are no word-heavy pages. This is a sequel issue that continues the intense violence while pairing it with high-stakes drama that our two confident leads must deal with.
The art here is drawn in a slightly cartoonish style reminiscent of late 90’s early 2000’s comics with decent lighting and shading. The color palette leans towards the darker side with a lot of greens and grays, along with some red and blue. For scenery we have an open field surrounded by trees which is where the story starts off. A couple of the other locations are a bar and a castle-like fort. The backgrounds usually show the immediate and some distant objects but they can occasionally just be a dark gradient color. The expression level here is high as these characters rarely, if ever, hide how they feel. The main emotion is anger and rage with a decent amount of shock and confusion. The faces have an overall above-average amount of detail and they can get a bit animated which helps the different expressions come across strongly. The fishmen’s looks can range from humanoid to animalistic. The equipment consists of firearms, swords, and more specialized weapons. The violence here is very bloody with gruesome attacks leading to gore and limb separation. The action scenes tend to come in bursts and have a high amount of panels which helps it all flow well. The women here wear tight and revealing clothes and they are all curvy with large breasts.
