The Deadly Trio: Doomsayer #1 is a comic created and written by Jimmy Palmiotti, Amanda Conner, Brian Pulido, and Billy Tucci with illustrations by Adriana Melo. Dorian and Rondo travel across galaxies warning planets about the coming of Kalissa Gore. This is a science fiction fantasy comic with a good dose of drama, explosive action, and a main cast full of women. The first lady we meet is Dorian, she is the last surviving member of her planet and she flies around in a spaceship with Rondo warning people of their impending doom. Rondo is a cat(or monkey?)-like alien creature who helps Dorian in finding the next planet to warn. We’ll meet the other ladies as the plot progresses. This story begins with some narration form Dorian as laments their failure to warn a planet of the invading force led by Kalissa Gore. After shedding a few tears she enters a six-month sleep as her and Rondo head to the fragrant planet Ontarius to tell them of their impending doom. This takes place in a world where there are many different planets teeming with intelligent life. The violence here can be explosive, and there are gruesome attacks leading to blood and gore. The pacing here is steady overall with some slower, talk-heavy moments. The tone is like that of a sci-fi epic movie you’d see from the 70’s or 80’s with a theme of catastrophe. There are many intense moments that brought about because of danger, violence, and drama. The dialogue is mainly conversational with decent back-and-forth along with some narration courtesy of Dorian. The talking style is modern and there are some big words that you might not know. There are at least a few word-heavy pages and there are many thick text bubbles/blocks. This is an intriguing debut issue that throws us right into the fray as these determined characters attempt to save others from impending doom.
The art here is drawn in a detailed, modern style with a strong focus on lighting. The color range is very wide with a palette familiar to the sci-fi genre but there are also some more vibrant tones. Most of the scenery here is outer space with planets and stars though we will see some lush greenery and blooming flowers. There isn’t a central location as Dorian and Rondo are traveling from place to place with some of the areas they visit being spaceships, unique planets, space stations, palaces, and temples. Most of the time the backgrounds show the actual surroundings but on occasion it’ll be a stylized gradient. The expression level here is high as these characters rarely hide how they truly feel. The emotional range here leans towards the somber side with a lot of sadness, anger, confusion, shock, rage, and sinister happiness. The faces have a high amount of detail so most expressions are clear and strong. The mystical/tech effects shine brightly and look white-hot and they tend to stand out when they appear. The violence is delivered via physicality, laser, explosions, and other unknown methods. There are bloody and gory moments along with dismemberment and implied gruesomeness. The action scenes come in bursts with a high amount of panels and they can be lengthy with a smooth flow overall. Most of the women here have large breasts and model-like bodies while wearing skintight and/or revealing clothes.
