Queen #1 is a comic written by Jaime Me with art by Bernard Gita and colors by Sean Callahan. The Deputy Prime Minister receives a mysterious phone call from someone who says they want to help. This is a political thriller comic that takes place in the UK and has a good dose of drama and mystery. The leading lady here is Emily Green, she is the Deputy Prime Minister and part of the Conservation Party. She has been planning on retiring and is considering getting a divorce. The Prime Minister is Daniel Camden and the Unity(opposition) Leader is Robert Band. This story begins in the House of Commons with some choice words between Daniel and Robert as the general election looms. Afterwards Emily is sitting in her car tired when her secretary/assistant walks up and gives her a message from her husband and some mail. Emily then heads home and while there receives a phone call. There isn’t any violence but there is a bit of blood. The pacing is steady with a political thriller-like tone. There are a few intense moments due to drama. The dialogue is mostly conversational in a UK style with some good back-and-forth. There are no word-heavy pages here. This is a debut issue that sets the scene and builds the tension as we get a mixture of political maneuvering and uneasy mystery.
The art here is drawn in a modern style with a light bit of roughness and is somewhat reminiscent of older comics. The color palette is realistic with more dark, muted tones than light and vibrant. Aside from a couple shots of lawn there isn’t any natural scenery. The main location Emily Green’s home but some scenes take place in the House of Commons and others in transit. The backgrounds usually show the immediate surroundings but a decent amount of the time it’ll be a gradient color. The expression level here is around average as the default look is a hard, unflinching one. Emotions we’ll see are shock, confusion, anger, annoyance, and happiness. The faces have an average to high amount of detail which makes every expression seem purposeful and clear. There aren’t any weapons used or any violence, but there is a bit of blood. No action scenes here.
