Magi’s Grace #3 is a comic written by JD Calderon with illustrations by C. Michael Lanning with colors by Champe Ramirez. Magi and his motley crew join Grace in battling against a powerful being. This is a supernatural thriller comic with vampires, heavy violence, magical abilities, and a bit of comedy. The leading lady here is Grace, she is a blunt sorceress who is one half of a monster-hunting team. The other half is Magi, he is the heavy of the pair and has a large assortment of weaponry equipped to handle both general and specific threats. This story continues where the last one left off with an assault on Henly Fort which is where a vampire and his turned/enthralled fish people reside. Weapons are introduced, there is big-crowd brawling, and magical powers are on display. This takes place in a modern world with many mythical beings and creatures. The violence here can be gruesome with brutal attacks that lead to strong gore. This moves at a somewhat fast pace as this is action –heavy and it has a desperate, final battle tone. This has multiple violently intense moments but the drama isn’t that high. The dialogue is almost equal parts narration and spoken words with some monologuing, humor, and insults. There are no word-heavy pages. This is an exciting penultimate issue with plenty of combat and light character development as this series begins to wrap things up.
The art here is drawn in a detailed, slightly cartoonish, late 90’s/early 2000’s style similar to a series like Danger Girl with decent lighting and shading. The color range is overall realistic with dark/faded tones; red, green, and pink are the most prominent hues here. This takes place in a stone castle-like building with the only natural scenery being a quick shot of some distant greenery. This fort has a large hall with pillars and this serves as the only location. Backgrounds do a good job of showing the immediate surroundings which in this case usually means pink-orangeish walls. The expression level here is a bit above-average as these characters wear their emotions on their sleeves. Some of the different looks here include shock, fear, anger, happiness, and irritation. The faces have a good amount of detail and can get a little bit animated which usually leads to the different expressions coming across clearly. Magical abilities have a transparent soft pink glow to them. Weapons used here include specialized firearms, blades, and lasers. The violence here is very gruesome with flesh, blood, and body parts flying all over the place due to vicious attacks. This comic is basically just one long action scene with a good flow, panel variation, and rare lulls.
