NecroGeist is a comic written by Kristopher Jerome with art by Christian Dibari and colors by Luiz Zavala. This former “poker” seeks revenge against the rich and powerful in order to free others like her. This is a futuristic cyberpunk science fiction comic with a dark tone, very gruesome violence, and some neo-noir vibes. The leading lady here is an unnamed woman who is a former “poker” who is justifiably enraged at the elite and she is on the warpath against them. She has at least a couple of cybernetic enhancements, specifically a right arm that can turn into a variety of tools from cannons to grappling hooks. This story begins with this woman brutally interrogating a man about the location of an upcoming party. After getting the answers she was looking for she hopes on her motorcycle and explains to us just how depraved and sick this place is. This takes place in a world where people can become “pokers” which are prostitutes who sell themselves into sex slavery for reasons like debt. The violence here is extremely gruesome with heavy gore and blood shooting everywhere. This moves at a faster pace and has a gritty cyberpunk tone. This has dark dramatic undertones with a very high violent intensity. The dialogue is very aggressive and there is a significant amount of noir-style thought narration. There aren’t any word-heavy pages. This is a gripping, thrilling, and intriguing issue that shows us how one might fight back in a technologically advanced but exploitative society where violence seems to be the only way to communicate.
The art here is drawn in a stylized rough sketch-like manner with well done lighting and shading. This color palette is predominantly yellow/orange and purple/pink with a lot of robotic silver/grey as well. Though there are outdoor scenes this takes place in the heart of this futuristic Moscow so there isn’t any natural scenery. This story changes locations more than a few times but the different places tend to have a cold, metallic, and occasionally brutalism-like look. Backgrounds are more often than not cloudy gradient colors with stylized lines. The expression level here is a bit above-average as most of these characters react strongly to the various situations. Fear is the most common emotion with anger a close and sadness a distant third. Faces here have a decent to above-average amount of detail from the eyes to teeth; most of the different expressions will be very clear. This leading lady has has augments and gear that are very reminiscent of Samus Aran from the Metroid series with a similar type of mask and gun(with grappling hooks). Firearms of various forms are the main weapon here and most of these characters are heavily augmented to the point where they are dissimilar to robots. Violence here features numerous gruesome attacks that lead to a lot of blood and very heavy gore. Action scenes come in both short and lengthy bursts with a wide variety of angles, perspectives, and an overall good flow.
