4 Pages 16 Bars: A Visual Mixtape Volume 10: Unbelievable

4 Pages 16 Bars: A Visual Mixtape Volume 10: Unbelievable is a collection of comic snippets, articles, artist spotlights, and history lessons centered on Black (but sometimes other POC) creators. You’ll see the work of famed cover artists, skilled writers, and the indiest of comic companies. The genres here are all over the place from real world events to fantasy and superheroes and futuristic science fiction. There are stories containing child-like silliness and others as gruesome and bloody as something from the 90’s. The art tends to match the story with the occasional unique style; most of these are in color with strong shading. Articles are very informative as they dive into the story of creators like Jackie Ormes and Turtel Onli.
“Which story was your favorite?”
PUNXofRAGE ZERO.
“Which story had your favorite art?”
Canton Kid.
“How many stories are there?”
At least fifteen different sections (art pages, comics, articles) of at least 4 pages each.
“All those stories, can I get one quote?”
“But sometimes you have to let them know.”
“Have you ever read a full comic that was featured in this series?”
I don’t know it for a fact but I’m pretty sure I have.

What the #@%# Mama? – The Prequel

What the #@%# Mama – The Prequel is a collection of comics and comic strips about a family with two vulgar and slick-talking grannies named Nanita and Vernita. These stories have a sitcom-like vibe with jokes that span different generations and decades. The opening story “Miss Daisy Beach” has ten women including Nanita and Vernita competing in a 75-and-up pageant, “Pocket Monster” sees Lena and Shelly at the doctor, and “The Ballad of Vernita” has Shelly bringing her new boyfriend to Nanita’s birthday party. There are additional comics and humorous shorts that flesh out this world and its characters. This can get vulgar and sexual when it comes to subject matter they don’t show anything graphic. The art here is smoothly cartoonish with realistic lighting and stagnant backgrounds.
“Which story was your favorite?”
She Said Yes.
“Which story had your favorite art?”
Though there are four artists the art is too similar for me to noticeably tell the difference.
“How many stories are there?”
Ten comics, 3-14 pages each, and sixteen strips/one-pagers.
“All those stories, can I get one quote?”
“You see what I have to deal with?”
“Does your mom ever say wild things?”
Nah, but sometimes she doesn’t answer the phone when I call.

The Comic Shop: The Comic

The Comic Shop: The Comic is an anthology with stories based on the show “The Comic Shop” or written by some of the actors on said show. The overall vibe is comedic with occasional seriousness and desperate drama. All of these stories star Black characters and tend to be either slice-of-lifes or science fiction superhero romps. Some comic examples are: “Edible Man”, a man who gains new superpowers depending on the flavor of edible he eats, “The Curious Case of Keke Wyatt”, a deep dive into the past relationship of Comic Shop characters Keke and Stephanie, and “Stephanie’s Day Off”, a tale of Steph taking a day off and trying not to worry about the state of the shop. The superhero stories have violence but it doesn’t get bloody or gruesome. Art here is realistically colorful with styles leaning towards serious rather than cartoonish.
“Which story was your favorite?”
Edible Man.
“Which story had your favorite art?”
The Curious Case of Keke Wyatt.
“How many stories are there?”
Six, but excluding the two-page prelude they range from 8-10 pages in length.
“All those stories, can I get one quote?”
What is the deal with Steph and Keke?”
“How’d you like the show?”
It was funny with good moments, characters, and guest stars. I hope it gets a second season.

All-True Outlaw Volume 1

All-True Outlaw Volume 1 is an anthology full of Wild West stories usually starring characters handy with a gun. Though the genre can switch from horror to revenge the element consistent with most of these tales is violence. Sometimes the star is the lawman, other times it’s the criminal on the run. Sometimes we just follow a confused man as he stumbles through a strange situation. A few of the different stories here are: “Horror on Hogger Hill”, some road agents flee from the law to a house in the woods, “High Noel”, a few men are trying to deliver presents in Alaska, and “Mother Hen”, a madam defends her girls from rough and cruel men. The violence can get very bloody with some gory and gruesome moments. Most of the art styles are serious and realistic with some grit but a few can be slightly cartoonish; everything is in black-and-white.
“Which story was your favorite?”
Taking a Life.
“Which story had your favorite art?”
Mother Hen and Taking a Life.
“How many stories are there?”
Eight regular stories ranging from 4-14 pages each and five “Satterwhite & Fosgrove” stories rangin from 10-14 pages each.
“All those stories, can I get one quote?”
“Sorry to ruin whatever plans you got cooked up.”
“When’s the last time you watched a Western?”
After I finished Maverick (series not movie) I took a break, I think I’ll watch The Quick and the Dead next.
