Amelia Sky #1 is a comic written by Jermaine M. Boyd with illustrations by Gwynn Tavares. After an apocalyptic event a young girl searches for her family. This is a post-apocalyptic comic with supernatural, science fiction, and horror elements as well as a bit of drama. The leading lady for this tale is Amelia Sky, she is a young girl with unexplained abilities who is currently suffering from memory loss. The story begins with New York City under some sort of attack with crowds of people rushing down the streets. Amelia is being carried by her father, who is followed by her mother, as he attempts to get her to safety. The violence here is hard-hitting with some blood and gruesome moments. The pacing here is fast at first but it slows down to steady afterwards. The tone is like that of an isolation-focused horror with intense moments due to danger and violence. The dialogue is conversational with some thick text bubbles. There are no word-heavy pages here. This is an eerie debut issue that has creepy worldbuilding, unanswered questions, and a lead who isn’t afraid to look for answers.
The art here is softly detailed and looks to be drawn with watercolors. The colors here tend to be dark in tone with purposeful low saturation. For scenery we have snow-covered streets, buildings, and vehicles. The location changes frequently as Amelia travels throughout a post-apocalyptic New York. She’ll enter bunkers and homes and travel long distances. The backgrounds usually show the surroundings but occasionally it’ll be a gradient color, usually bright. The expression level here leans a bit towards the lower end as these characters have hardened or shocked faces. The emotional range here consists of sadness, fear, and terror. The faces are decently drawn but can appear simplistic at times. The different expressions still manage to come across clearly. There are strange creatures here that have similarities to ones we see in real life. The violence is hard-hitting and a bit gruesome with some blood but no gore. The action scenes usually come in quick bursts with a decent amount of panels.
