Blood Type V #1 is a comic written by Chris Moses with art by Laura Todisco. A woman who hunts down monsters for a living looks for a bigger bounty. This is a supernatural story with light noir vibes that is very violent and features vampires and werewolves. The leading lady for this tale is Verneta, she is a persecutor with cursed blood who uses her income to protect herself and her younger sister Summer. There are quite a few interesting characters that will cross Verneta’s path from the bodyguard Gena to high-level and very dangerous vampires. The story begins with a battle between a couple of werewolves that Verneta gets involved in. Afterwards she goes through what seems to be a regular routine of her bagging and tagging and receiving her pay. This takes place in a world where creatures both mythical and supernatural are common. The action here is very bloody with light gore but gruesome attacks. The pacing is steady and the tone is stressful with some heavy moment. The intensity is high as Verneta is frequently in dangerous situations. The dialogue is mostly conversational with some aggression and narration from Verneta. No word-heavy pages here. This is a comic about monster hunting that stars a woman who isn’t afraid to get violent to support and protect those she loves.
The art here is very detailed and drawn in a more modern style with some well-done shading and use of halftone-dotting. The comic is primarily in black-and-white with red being the only other color. There is a pervasive atmosphere of danger that you’ll feel. This takes place in the inner city so the scenery consists of buildings and alleyways. The main location for this story is Vernata and Summer’s apartment building with the streets a distant second. The backgrounds usually show the scene but they can occasionally be a color gradient. The expression level here is slightly above-average as these characters tend to wear their emotions on their sleeves. The primary looks are those of sadness and anger with fear and confusion also being notable. The faces have well-drawn features like the eyes and mouth so every expression comes across clearly and subtle ones can be noticed. Verneta’s weapon of choice is dual hooks with chains. The violence involves slicing, gruesome burning, and bone-breaking with some destructive hard hits and plenty of blood. The action scenes flow well and can be lengthy with a high number of panels. Vernata wears on outfit that has her breasts on display and heels but the rest of it seems made for this kind of work.
