Boom Queens #1 is a comic created by Ramon Govea & Jacqueline Fae and published by Myth Division. This story takes place in what I assume is a post-apocalyptic world with futuristic elements. This comic stars a woman I’ll be calling Redhead, because no one says her name. Redhead has a couple of friends I’ll be calling Mohawk and Goth because their names aren’t spoken either. To be frank, the only person whose name we hear is some guy named the Crow. Anyway Miss Redhead is on a mission to crash a party that shouldn’t even be happening. And she’s apparently a very wanted woman. So she has to evade capture and still get the job done but at least she has Mohawk and Goth there to assist her. This comic has a below-average amount of dialogue and not much in the way of banter. When someone from the main cast speaks they are usually straight to the point. There are some nice action sequences and though the plot isn’t confusing it does leave some parts unexplained that will probably be revisited later. This is a debut comic that will have you looking for the next issue. Why the title Boom Queens? Because these ladies love bombs.
This story takes place in the “Outskirts” and a bird’s-eye view of this location shows a bunch of buildings and a few skyscrapers that have an unusual amount of foliage on the outside. It’s like these buildings were abandoned for a good while. The majority of the story takes place in one of these tall ones, and quite a few floors are touched on. The main expression in this comic is anger. Though Redhead does flash a different look every now if you blink you might miss it. The faces are drawn with a good amount of detail but there is some light face sameness between a few of the characters. Not enough to confuse you though. The outfits look like if the post-apocalypse just happened and the fashion trends of before still stuck around a bit BUT people were thinking about Mad Max when they picked out the clothes. The fits are made for movement, which is good because they be fighting a lot. The fights are easy follow and flow nicely from panel-to-panel. Are the women here sexualized? Well every woman in this comic looks like a model and most have an above-average chest size. But besides their initial looks no extra attention is paid to their appearance. One thing this comic does well is make the characters standout on the page. Your eyes will be drawn to them first when you flip the page.
