Born of Blood #1 is a comic written by Dolan and published by Merc Publishing. This is a sort of super prequel to Deathrage as this takes place thousands of years ago during Sparta’s heyday. The star of this story is Princess Giaris, daughter of Cleomenes, King of Sparta. This story follows her path from birth to warrior. There is an egregious amount of action here. Fighting all over the place, blood everywhere, and some gore here and there. It’s possible the second issue will do more in terms of story but this debut was designed to showcase the grit and grind. When it comes to Giaris’s internal monologue this comic will spare no words, but when it comes to spoken word they are few and far between. Overall this comic doesn’t get annoyingly wordy. This is a comic focused on a woman was thrown in the fire and we get to see how she climbs out.
This whole comic has a brown sort of tone that emphasizes the ancientness of the story. It also makes the story seem rougher. The bulk of this story takes place in a dungeon and it has all the set pieces you’d expect. Skeletons, chains, stone floors, you know the vibes. The Greeks invented stoicism and that and anger are really the only looks you’ll see in this comic. There isn’t any face sameness but that’s partly due to the fact that the cast of characters is very small. There are three main outfits here: a dress that is a slight step above a negligee or a large t-shirt, pteruges with nothing else, and a toga. The weapons of choice are blades. Short or long, thick or thin, it is still sharp. As I mentioned above there is a lot of action with a bunch of fight scenes. Every now and then they go from panel-to-panel with an awful large gap between sequences but for the most part you’ll be able to follow along. Body-wise you might consider Giaris to be sexualized but in-comic no attention is paid to her looks. She isn’t the most clothed though, but there is a good reason for that.
