Cos & Effect #1 is a comic written by Marat Mychaels & Sajad Shah with art by Sajad Shah and colors by Sean Forney. A cosplayer travels to the worlds of different comic books. This is a supernatural comic with references to famous comic book characters and worlds. The leading lady for this tale is Ashley Callaway, she is a cosplayer who is preparing for an upcoming comic convention that is finding herself in strange situations. The story begins with her, dressed as Rogue, running from a Tyrannosaurus Rex in the Savage Lands. After waking up from this nightmare she recounts the events that led up to this point. There isn’t any actual violence here. The pacing is a bit fast and the tone is somewhat light. There a few intense moments due to danger. The dialogue is mainly conversational with a decent amount of Ashley’s thoughts via narration. There are no word-heavy pages here. This is an interesting debut issue that gives us an exciting premise with a wide-eyed and adventurous lead.
The art here is drawn in a slightly soft-looking, smooth modern style with a good amount of detail. The color range here is decently wide with a focus on lighting. For scenery we do get some lush jungle but for the most part this takes place in and around buildings. The main location is Ashley’s home but a couple scenes take place elsewhere in the real and fictional world. The backgrounds are split between showing the surroundings and just being a gradient color. The expression level here is a bit below-average as Ashley likes to maintain a blankish look most of the time. The main emotion is fear with shock coming in at second. The faces have a good amount of detail and show the different expressions well. There isn’t any actual violence here, but it gets close. The action scenes come in quick bursts and have good flow. Ashley does wear some skintight and revealing cosplay outfits.
