Crimson Sails #2 is a comic written by Dan Wickline with line art by Art Voyager and colors by Hector Rubilar. Natalya receives “special treatment” from the captain while on board the Jericho. This is a high seas pirate comic that is very sexual, has bloody violence, and stars a nearly all-woman cast. The leading lady here is Natalya, she is a pale-skinned, dark-haired pirate who has been captured by the all-woman crew of the Jericho. Their captain is a stern, direct, and somewhat cruel woman who likes to toy with her prisoners. This story begins where the last issue ended which is with Natalya being captured and brought to the Jericho. Natalya threatens to kill everyone and she starts to fight back but her attempt to dive overboard is violently halted by the captain. There are also flashbacks of Natalya’s past. This takes place in an unspecified time period that might be the Golden Age of Piracy. The violence here is bloody and hard-hitting but there isn’t any gore. The pacing is overall a bit faster than average with that classic high seas, swashbuckling pirate tone. There some violent, dramatic, and sexually intense moments here. The dialogue is more modern than one might expect and there is good amount of conversational back-and-forth and aggression. There are no word-heavy pages here. This is a sequel issue that trades in the violence of the first for something much more sensual while continuing to expound on the character of its leading lady.
The art here is a drawn in a detailed style that is reminiscent of comics from the 90’s/2000’s. The color range here fits the genre with a lot of brown, reddish-pink, and blue. Though most of this takes place on a ship there aren’t many shots of the water or the sky. The main location in the present is the Jericho but Natalya’s flashbacks are near the docks and a brothel. These places are fleshed out and seem alive thanks to intricate details. The backgrounds usually show the actual surroundings though on rare occasion it’ll just be a gradient color. The expression level here is a bit above-average as these characters frequently react to what is going on. Anger, shock, and sinister happiness are the main emotions on display. The faces have a good amount of detail and they tend to show the different looks clearly. Blunt weapons are the common choice here though blades do make an appearance. Most of the violence is physical with some heavy hits and blood but nothing gory or gruesome. The actions scenes are relatively short and have a good flow with a balance of small and large panels. All of the women here wear revealing/tight clothes, look like models, and have large breasts. There are some sexual moments that aren’t outright portrayed as assault but they don’t exactly have consent.
