Deathrage #1 is a comic created by Merc Publishing. This comic is the origin story of our title character. Now this marks the second appearance of Deathrage as his first was in Miss Meow #1(if you haven’t read it I recommend you do), and he was quite the character there. We’ll learn a little bit about why he is the way is in this issue. This is a full 24-page comic but it reads fast. We see pre-Deathrage in action, how he got his powers, and some things he did later. We have appearances from Leonidas, a woman named Candy, and a man named Teddy. This comic seems like it was written to set the stage for later escapades, like most #1’s are. All in all this is a debut comic that is intriguing enough to keep you awake and fast enough that to keep your attention.
Shiny and shadowed is one way to describe this more modern art style here. It makes outfits look sharper and sinister faces even more so. The architecture plays a significant role in telling the story and so it looms prominently in each scene. The majesty of buildings, sculptures, and even water fountains will draw your gaze. Each character you’ll see stands out which is very important for stories like this.. We also don’t have the face sameness that tends to plague comics drawn in this art style. This is very nice to look at.
“Is this worth reading?”
Yes.
“Would I like this?”
If you like anti-heroes and superpower squabbles you should dive into this. If you are a Miss Meow fan you should read this because they are intertwined. If there are any origin story fans out there they should give this a spin.
“What would this comic’s film rating be?”
R. A tad bit gruesome. Just a tad.
“Could I get a quote from the comic?”
“You can’t tell them anything from where you’re going.”
