Dust Bunny #1 is a comic written & lettered by Jason Martin with artwork & coloring by Mauricio Mora. A bounty duster is called when a town is hit with a dust virus infection. This is a science fiction post-apocalyptic comic that takes place in a dry world with fire-based violence and slight Western vibes. The leading lady here is an unnamed bounty duster with long blue hair who wears a white bikini, hat, and poncho. She has a variety of weapons and rides an angry-looking horse. This story begins with an overview of how the world has mostly dried up and become a desert-like wasteland. The bounty duster we’re following rides across the desert, using tools to extract water from a lizard as they make their way to the town. They also inform us of the origins of the dust virus. The dust virus causes people to become zombie-like and feed on others for thirst reasons which can lead to them evolving. This takes place in a world where extreme heat has caused even the oceans to dry up and made water a very scarce resource. The violence here is bloody and has gruesome moments that lead to gore. The pacing is faster than average with a tone like Mad Max mixed with a Western. There are multiple violently and dangerously intense moments. There is much more narration from this lady bounty duster than actual talking but there are some mid-battle quips. The talking style is very Californian/valley girl. This is a compelling issue that does a lot of worldbuilding while still managing to showcase the talents and skill of its leading lady.
The art here is drawn in a smoothly detailed modern style with a strong focus on lighting. A light dusty brown is the main color here with some faded blacks and grays tying for second. The scenery serves as the primary location as this bounty dusters’ travels take her across long stretches of arid desert with arches, mesas, vehicle graveyards, and skeletons of both animals and humans. The town she is headed to is Town 242, it consists of a bunch of cargo containers placed together outside of a large ship. The backgrounds always show the immediate surroundings with the dusty earth nearly always present. The expression level here is below average as the bounty duster in question only gives us a few different looks while wearing shades. There are only a few different emotions shown here: slight happiness, shock, and focus. The faces have an above-average amount of detail and show the limited expressions clearly. Dust virus infected humans are a dark blue/grey and at higher evolutions they start to lose soft tissue while their body begins to harden. The violence is primarily delivered via firearms and explosives. There are many gruesome attacks that lead to splashing blood and heavy gore. There is only one action scene and it is pretty lengthy with a smooth flow and different angles. The leading lady here wears a revealing outfit, has large breasts, and is subject to a few lewd shots.
