Ennead: The Rule of Nine, Book 5 – May We Find Peace is a comic created and written by J. L. Johnson with art by Luke Horsman. Just like when you shake up a soda bottle and twist the top, things are about to get messy. We have three to fourish story threads to follow here and though may seem mutually exclusive I have a feeling they’ll come together at some point. We follow the man who seems to be the main protagonist Inahtuu as he travels to yet another place. Well get a glimpse of the soldier boys as they traverse a forest deep in lore and potential danger. Lastly we look at a new group of soldiers that we have yet to see in this series as they receive news of things that place in issue one. This comic is really trying to build a strong, vibrant, and interesting world, and one of the pitfall of this is an oversaturation of words on the page. It usually is interesting and adds to the story, but when it isn’t? Man it can be a trudge. We do get some extra history and backstory this time so that’s something to look forward to. The plot is still holding up even in issue five, and I’m quite interested in where it goes from here.
The last two issues had different artists but what has remained constant is the high-level of art shown. Locations have never been showcased forreal in this comic other than place setting and to be frank, that’s fine. Unless you pay close attention to the little details on them, the faces suffer from a bit of sameness. The dialogue and facial scars will be your best friends. The outfits are still from the medieval casual line but we do get to see a character in full armor and boy do they shine. An underrated quality this comic has is the variety of hairstyles, and they are drawn pretty well. Once you finish reading all the words, on the page, you can sit back and look at the art.
