Evora Leigh: A New Breed #1 is a comic written by Malcolm McFadden with art by Ariyibi Toluwalase and Success Ikupolati. A woman infiltrates a tech lab in search of her parents. This is a fast-paced, action-filled issue starring a young lady with superpowers. The lady in question is Evora Leigh Smith; she struggles with her anger and has the ability to manipulate energy. The story begins with violence and it rarely lets up. The majority of the story takes place in the present day but we do get some flashbacks. The theme here is one of revenge and the action displayed matches that, with many crushing attacks but with little blood and no gore. This comic moves very fast, like a superheroine John Wick. The tone is very angry and serious with no humor at all. The intensity is high from the get-go and it barely gives the reader a moment to breathe. The dialogue is mostly narration from inside Evora’s head with not much being spoken aloud. She speaks in a succinct way, very straight and to the point. There is only one wordy page. This is a debut comic that starts with a bang and doesn’t let up while ending with a cliffhanger that’ll have you anticipating a sequel.
The art style here has a slightly rough look to it and handles the various lighting effects with skill. The colors here seem to be aimed towards realism and you can relate some of these locations to places you’ve actually been. Speaking of locations, the majority of this story takes place in a tech facility so everything looks clean and professional. The panel backgrounds are constantly filled with parts of the scene from broken walls to smashed floors. The expression level here is a little below-average as the main look from Evora is that of anger and everyone else is fearful. The faces have well-drawn features so all the looks come across clearly. The energy manipulation done by Evora is a bright electric pink that becomes the highlight of any page it is on. The action scenes here are lengthy and very destructive. Things get lightly bloody but this comic is devoid of gore. Evora wears a suit that is made for dangerous situations but is also stylish.
