Fatgirl #1 is a comic created by John Rhodes and published by Hyperverse Comics. It is set in the same world as the Hyperverse series Nothing-Man but takes place 3 months before Nothing-Man Issue #1. Skylar is a skateboarding steel mill worker living in a suburb of Paradise City. Her weight is a constant source of ridicule by her coworkers who prefer the gorgeous bodies of Hyperoids and Hyprids. We can see that even though she acts like it doesn’t affect her it actually does. After an explosion downtown she resolves to make a difference in spite of how she is perceived. This origin story was needed not just to give another backstory on a featured character, but to give us a look on how civilians viewed the big superheroes. They aren’t on as high a pedestal as one might think.
The art seen here differs from Nothing-Man as this has more of a cartoony vibe. The faces are expressive as usual but have a goofier look to them, and sometimes it seems out of place. The exterior shots of the city and the interior shots of the steel mill help build the character of Fatgirl as we see how great the city supposedly is but how she doesn’t get to experience that. Also in some shots where is looking at the sky at some superheroes we see the juxtaposition of her current place in the world compared to theirs. And whereas Nothing-Man has many colors with a slight fade to them, the colors here are bright and stand out.
“Is this worth reading?”
Yes
“Would I like this?”
If you like superheroines and those who answer the call to action, this is good. And if you like Nothing-Man you should read this as it expands its world.
“What would this comic’s film rating be?”
PG.
“Could I get a quote from the comic?”
“Piss off, I love the junk in this trunk.”
