Firebreak #1 is a comic created by Jay Pear. This is a story about a teenager named Ray Ransome who has the power to both withstand heat and heat things up. He received this power when a meteor crash-landed in his backyard and a crystal was inside. But this comic doesn’t show any of that, because this isn’t even issue number one. It’s actually number fifteen, and Ray is after one of his nemeses Professor Shard’s stockpile of meteorite(our hero’s kryptonite)! This is an upbeat superhero tale that has some clear-cut villains, people with specific goals, and interesting characters. The dialogue here is great and refreshing. There isn’t a bunch of that corny sounding “hands on hips” hero and villain banter, it all sounds like things people would actually say. This isn’t all sunshine and rainbows however so expect the boat to be rocked a bit. This comic is also building a good foundation for some well done characterization.
This art is drawn in the modern comic style with solid line and colors. Everything looks smooth but every now and then some things will look a bit off. The various buildings look extremely sharp and well designed, in some scenes they stand out. The action scenes flow well and are easy to follow. There is a decent amount of character expression though I wished they emoted more in the face. This is a realistically colored comic, not too bright but not at all faded.
“Is this worth reading?”
Yeah.
“Would I like this?”
If you like young heroes and stories that hop around a bit this might be up your alley. Also some rumblings of mystery.
“What would this comic’s film rating be?”
PG-13.
“Could I get a quote from the comic?”
“…okay, sorry, what happened with the doors?”
