God Summoner Chapter 1 is a comic created by Dionysis Zogaris with art by Manos Lagouvardos. If you are familiar at all with the rise of Catholicism and the Inquisition then certain elements of this comic won’t be too shocking. Our story takes place in two worlds, the main one being Zaros, also known as “The Cursed Realm.” Our story starts off with Queen/Pope Yram stating that she’s finally found the one who will summon their true god. She then sends her henchmen to search the Athabaskara region for someone. After some aggressive discussion with some infidels they discover the location of their quarry and prepare to make their next move. This world is a bit of a cross between high and low fantasy, so fans of either might find their home here. We only get a light dusting of the motivations behind each character but on the surface they aren’t hard to understand. So far this story is pretty straightforward and quite interesting. Since this was more of introductory/set up issue I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of turns this tale takes.
Though some might not like it when a comic is in black-and-white, I sometimes prefer the higher level of detail normally showcased in art like this. Everything here looks gorgeous. One thing I tend to gravitate towards in comics is the expressiveness of the characters and oh boy is it thick here. You can read everything on their faces, you can see the pain and weariness behind the eyes, its details like these that help you understand the characters better. The landscape is so well-drawn that you could imagine yourself there. When it comes to architecture they really put their foot in it. They wove stories into the interiors of these buildings using blemishes and wear-and-tear and dilapidation. Just all-around gorgeous art.
“Is this worth reading?”
Yes.
“Would I like this?”
If you like fantasy tales with good lore I suggest you read this. Also for fans of stories where people are pulled from obscurity to importance.
“What would this comic’s film rating be?”
PG-13. Lil bit of gore.
“Could I get a quote from the comic?”
“Don’t move. You have something in your hair.”
