God Summoner Chapter 3 is a comic created by Dionysis Zogaris with art by Manos Lagouvardos. For this third installment the focus is on the young Adelice as she grapples with her new surroundings. This is a series with some pre-baked drama in it and because of that Adelice is caught up in some mess. There are a few new characters introduced here with the most important being Malik, a member of a resistance group. The plot picks up right where the last issue left off and we get more backstory and a better view of this world. You’ll get a clearer view of what exactly is being fought for on both sides. This isn’t the most action-packed issue but there is a healthy amount of suspense. The dialogue is of-the-moment and witty enough and it reads well. No excessive wordiness on these pages. Overall this is a sort of setup issue building us up for the next one, but as thick as this is it provides us with a good meal of story and characterization.
I am a big fan of black-and-white art because usually that means the level of detail is higher. And that is the case here! From the wood grain, to the individual eyebrow hairs, to sparks flying, this is some good looking art. We get some good interior shots of smaller locations but the good stuff is the wider, landscape shots. We see the Citadel, open plains, and it’s all courtesy of a train(the rhyme was coming as I typed it so I just let it happen). These characters have so much detail in the face that their expressions are easily readable. The anger, disgust, and pure determination are just some of the emotions we can glean without the words. It cannot be understated how well these faces are drawn, close ups are refreshing to look at and face sameness is not a thing. The outfits here are either medieval or 1920’s military. There are some unique weapons here, though some are the result of, “What if we combined this and that?” The action scenes are strung together but they have heavy impact.
“Is this worth reading?”
Yes.
“Would I like this?”
If you like good-looking black-and-white stories starring multiple people with a rich backstory that is slowly starting to unravel this might be for you. There is also a “rebelling against the powers that be” element present.
“What would this comic’s film rating be?”
PG-13.
“Could I get a quote from the comic?”
“I could have defeated them all if you just let me!”
