Grandma Chainsaw #1 is a comic written by Allen Dunford & Will Radford with art by Brian Balondo with colors by Jasen Smith. A group of friends get lost and seek help at an old ladies house. This is a supernatural horror comic with some comedy that stars a group of young adults and takes place at a creepy house in the middle of an eerie forest. There are four members of this group: Haiden and his girlfriend Haley, and Gabby and her girlfriend Liz. Haiden and Gabby are twins. The story begins with this group at a gas station getting directions from a random old man as their GPS isn’t working. After a drive through a forest filled with sibling arguments they blow a tire and end up in front of an old house. This is a very violent story with plenty blood and gore via gruesome attacks. The pacing here is steady and has the tone of a 90’s horror movie starring young adults. There are many intense moments due to danger, violence, and suspense. The dialogue here is conversational and aggressive with a lot of back-and-forth. There are no word-heavy pages here. This is a debut issue that establishes the situation and builds up the creepiness while giving us characters with unique personalities.
The art here is decently detailed with a gritty feel and significant shading. The color range here is full of mostly dark tones with black and red being the main ones. For scenery we have a thick twisted forest. The main location for this story is Hazel’s house which is multistoried with more than a few rooms. The backgrounds tend to be a gradient color with optional views of the surroundings. The expression level here is around average as some characters rarely move off their resting face. The emotional range consists of fear and terror with sadness and happiness both sinister and exuberant. The faces have a decent amount of detail and usually show the different expressions well. There is some face sameness among the characters. The violence here is bloody and gory with gruesome attacks and limb removal. The action here is easy to follow and not everything is shown on screen.
