Hawi #2 is a comic created and written by Beserat Debebe with art by Stanley Obende. A woman travels to a new world and gets the full scope of her current situation. This story has a focus on family and world-building. Our leading lady is Emnet, an Ethiopian woman who has found herself in various situations that she is unprepared for. Two new characters play significant roles her: One is a very knowledgeable man named Legesse and the other is a very connected fellow named Mustafa. There isn’t too much going on here plotwise; we meet new people, get questions answered, and learn about the city of Outlulit. There is a bit of action early on here but not much else. The dialogue is generally to the point and not full of big words and poetic speech; there is a decent amount of humor to be found. None of these pages are too wordy and they read smoothly. This is a good issue that sets up the world and gives us a foundation to build off of for future installments.
This issue has the same high detail as its predecessor but one major difference is the overabundance of color. The colors help set the tone of certain scenes and just make the world seem more alive. We once again have wonderfully drawn backgrounds and a city drawn with high levels of opulence. The faces once again have great focus on the smaller details but this time around they are much more expressive. The way the eyes bug out in shock and the easily seen looks of smugness and irritation are well done. The action scene has good flow and hits hard. The outfits here seem to have some African influence but I don’t enough to confirm or deny that.
“Is this worth reading?”
Yes.
“Would I like this?”
If you like tales starring black women featuring unknown enemies and motivations and an overall theme that is African influenced this is for you.
“What would this comic’s film rating be?”
PG-13. Some nasty looks.
“Could I get a quote from the comic?”
“He has been paying me to spy on you for years!”
