I Summoned a Demon and She’s Kinda My Type Volume 1 is a comic written by Chris Moses with art by FKiller. A college dropout comes across a magic book and decides to use it to grant himself a wish. This is a supernatural comic with an interesting premise and fleshed-out, comedic characters. The leading lad for this tale is Hajime Iwasaki, he’s a college dropout who works as a barista at his stepdad’s coffee shop. His best friend is Tonya and they have been friends since childhood. She is currently struggling through midterms. Last but not least we have the demon in question, Succi. She finds herself at a disadvantage due to recent circumstances and now she needs assistance. This story gets started with Hajime going through another rough day at work when he is visited by Tonya who has with her a mysterious book. Meanwhile Succi finds herself in an unpleasant situation in Hell. This takes place in our modern world but with a lot more supernatural happenings. The action here is physical with hard hits but no blood or gore. There are a lot of nude scenes. The pacing is steady with a lighthearted tone and some intense moments that never get too heavy. The dialogue is mostly humorous, witty, and conversational with the occasional glance at Hajime’s thoughts. No word-heavy pages here, but some text bubble do get thick. This is a debut issue that combines sexiness and humor with hints of romance in an entertaining and interesting package.
The art here is cartoonish with a strong sense of style, like a high quality Webtoon. The coloring here is well-done with a wide range and good lighting. This story takes place indoors for the most part so the main scenery is alleys and city streets. The main location is The Coffee House, the shop Hajime’s stepdad Erve owns. Throughout the course of this tale we’ll visit Hajime’s bedroom, Hell, and event spaces. The backgrounds sometimes show the scene but even when they do they can have a purposefully fuzzy and artistically distorted look that will draw your focus to what’s in the foreground. The expression level here is very high which is aided by the fact that it is cartoonish. The emotions are all over the place with looks of fear and seduction being the most prominent ones. The faces have big eyes and relatively large mouths and this helps every expression they show come across clearly. The non-human creatures here look like mythological beasts. The mystical effects are very bright and have an ethereal look. The violence here consists of hard hits and grapples which can occasionally reach slapstick levels. The action scenes here are of varying length and there are quite a few of them. They flow well and tend to feature a number of panels. Succi’s main outfit is revealing and she is frequently nude. Just abut every woman that comes across the page is pretty and the majority of them have large breasts and are thick.
