I Summoned a Demon and She’s Kinda My Type Volume 3 is a comic written by Chris Moses with art by FKiller. A school trip to the museum turns into an adventure when demon energy transforms the exhibits. This is a sexy supernatural comic with magical violence, personal drama, historical references, and cartoonish comedy. The main man here is Hajime Iwasaki, he is an artist and college dropout who, after summoning a demon(Succi), has a curse that he must dispel before the year is up or he loses his soul. He’s also gained the ability to use demonfire. Succi is the demon of the hour who has lost most of her extra body parts(e.g. horns, wings, tail) and has enlisted Hajime and others to help her retrieve them. She has a quick temper, a sordid past, and she isn’t afraid to use charm or violence to get what she wants. Tonya is Hajime’s best friend from childhood and she is a college student with a positive demeanor and she keeps a level head in even the most dangerous situations. Some others characters we’ll see are Agent Aquarius from the ZCA and the always barefoot cryptid hunter Hannah. This story begins with Hajime carrying three cups of coffee while walking to the museum with Succi. He is thinking about how it’s been two weeks since they’ve found any body parts and he’s coming to the realization that he might actually lose his soul. When they arrive at the museum and meet with Tonya and Hannah they discover that the museum has been unexpectedly closed and roped off. This takes place in a world where the supernatural happens and otherworldly creatures exist. The violence here can be hard-hitting with a bit of blood and no gore. This moves at an overall steady pace with a healthy mix of slower and speedier scenes. This has a comedic sitcom/anime-like tone with interesting lore. There are erotically, dramatically, and violently intense moments; more of the first one than the others. The dialogue is mostly conversational with frequent banter between the characters, mid-fight quips, and intro/closing narration from Hajime. You can count on one hand the number of thick text bubbles there are and there are no word-heavy pages. This is an exciting and revealing issue that expands on the lore, explores the main characters, and brings both the violence and sexiness along with some laughs.
The art here is drawn in a smoothly detailed, semi-cartoonish style with choice lighting. The color range is realistically wide but the overall palette predominantly features yellow/orange and purple. There really isn’t much natural scenery as this takes place directly outside and inside buildings. While the first primary location is a museum some of the more specific spots include: Prohibition-era Chicago, Ancient Japan, Ancient Rome, and Prehistoric times. The second central location is a college where the classroom, bathroom, and hallways are common areas. Backgrounds here tend to be very stylistic from halftone dotting to specialized graphics. Sometimes it’s the actual surroundings, sometimes it’s the stylized backdrop, and other times it is both. The expression level here is very high as these characters are constantly reacting from the subtle to the extreme. Emotions are all over the place from anger, rage, and fear to happiness, confusion, and sadness, as well as more sultry and erotic looks. The faces have an average to above-average amount of detail and this paired with the cartoonishness leads to the expressions being very clear. The demon energy has a purple neonish glow but Hajime’s demonfire is green. Though most of the violence is physical or magical there are some spears, tridents, and guns. There are some hard hits and unpleasant attacks with very little blood or gore. The action scenes come in bursts from short to long with an above-average panel count, multiple angles, and a smooth flow. All of the women here are curvy with most of them having large busts or butts. Most of their clothing is revealing, tight, or not there at all. The suggestive poses and lewd angles are constant. And while I don’t like to compare issues I think that everyone got thicker in this installment.
