Immortal Era #1 is a comic written by Edward Davis with art by Cezar Oliveira and colors by Viviana Spinelli. A group of survivors go through their daily life living underground after a biological phenomenon. This is a post-apocalyptic science fiction comic that takes place in a future where people cannot die. The leading lady for this tale is Aaroni, a woman annoyed by the status quo who works as a guard for the Hope Village and who likes to cuss. The main man is Miguel; he is the lead scout/scavenger who is very skilled at getting into areas and out of scrapes. The story begins in what seems to be the present day before jumping forward 200 years and that’s where things really get going. We’ll get a look at the normal routine for our main characters as well as the state of the world. The overarching goal is to find a solution to these problems, not just survive. The action here is gory with limbs getting removed and has pools of blood. The pacing is steady and the tone is very serious and gritty. There is a tense air with some bigger intense moments throughout. The dialogue is conversational and aggressive with some thick text bubbles. There are at least a couple word-heavy pages. This is an exciting debut comic for a series set in a post-apocalyptic world with an interesting premise and strong characters.
The art here is detailed with some slight grit and overall smoothness. The colors here tend to be washed out or grey with not much brightness which is common for this genre. The scenery is mainly dilapidated skyscrapers and rundown subways. The main location is Hope Village where the survivors are staying but some scenes take place in a hospital. Some of the subway cars are used as offices and living quarters. The backgrounds only show the scene they’re in some of the time, otherwise it is a rough yellow/orange/red gradient. The expression level here is slightly below-average as these characters will hold the same look through consecutive panels. The range is from stoic to angry which is it be expected from this genre. The faces are smoothly detailed and every look comes across clearly. The violence here is bloody and gory with blades getting involved. Limbs are removed, blood is pooled, and folk receive gruesome wounds. There are a number of action scenes with a flow that might have you questioning how they get from panel-to-panel but you should still be able to follow along. The outfit choice is varied across the board like JRPG protagonists.
