Jessi Zombie Hunter #2 is a comic written by Neo Edmunds with pencils by Fabrizio Pasini, inks by Diego Martini, and colors by Aini Darmawan. Jessi heads to Doctor VonDrake’s secret lab in hopes of finding a cure for the Zilch. This is a science fiction fantasy comic that is full of parodies with dystopian vibes and gruesome violence. The leading lady here is Jessi Hopps, she is a skilled combatant who is married to Robbie Hopps. Robbie contracted Zilch, which is a plague that causes the infected to lose their color and become hungry for anything not monochrome. Also appearing here is Doctor VonDrake, she is a very intelligent scientist and inventor who used to have a fling with Robbie. This story begins with Jessi in a skintight combat suit battling Zilch infected creatures in the middle of a graveyard. While battling these infected she recounts the different events that led up to this point like severing Robbie’s head and how the plague affected Happyville. This takes place in a world that is a parody of Who Framed Roger Rabbit and it is full of cartoon characters that are obvious references. The violence here is gruesome with a level of goriness but no blood. The pacing here is steady with tone that might remind you of horror flicks that have a layer of silliness. There are many violently intense moments. The dialogue here is mostly conversational with good back-and-forth and occasional narration from Jessi. There are no word-heavy pages here. This is an exciting sequel issue that ramps up the violence and shows how these characters, especially Jessi, can handle being in dire and desperate situations.
The art here is drawn in a detailed cartoonish style that is very reminiscent of late 90’s/early 2000’s comics. There are two dueling color palettes as we have the black-and-white of the Zilch infected creatures and the vibrant color of just about everything else. For scenery we have the dead-looking trees and low grass of a graveyard and the dusty and dry mountainous cliffs in the wastelands. The main location is Doctor VonDrake’s castle which has many different areas from control rooms to dungeons. The backgrounds more often than not show the actual surroundings like walls and floors but gradient colors do appear on occasion. The expression level is high as these characters have many strong reactions. Emotions we’ll see here include happiness, anger, confusion, shock, and fear. The faces have an overall average amount of detail and they can get animated which helps the different expressions come across strongly. There are a number of anthropomorphic animals; some are original, others are clear parodies. The violence is delivered in a variety of ways from katanas and grenades to firearms and physicality. There are many gruesome attacks that lead to gore but isn’t any blood here. The action scenes come in bursts with a mix of large and focused panels and have an unconfusing flow. All the women here are large-breasted and curvy.
